We're wrapped!

Firstly, I am sitting here and we can smell the smoke from the bushfires just up the road at Yering and Yarra Glen. Friends of ours live two streets away from our block and they can see the glow from the fires in their back yard. I just want to say Thank You and Stay Safe to all the CFA guys and girls who are doing a wonderful VOLUNTEER job fighting these fires. You people are ace!

Also a big WHOOO HOO to K, who finally got her building permit. Another gorgeous Illoura is soon to be built!!

Now on with the house stuff. Today (Saturday) we got an email from our lovely neighbours T&L to say that our house was wrapped today! They must have done it early because I would not want to be working in 46.4 degree heat!

There has been so much happening this week. The roof frame has been entirely finished, the windows are in!!!, majority of gutters have been put on, the scaffolding for the roof has been put up, the roof tiles have arrived, the plumbing has been roughed in AND some pallets of bricks have arrived. I really think it starts to look like a "real' house when the windows go in.

Like most of the other blogs I have read, I am not impressed with the bricks, now that they have arrived. We chose Nougat and on the wall at Austral Thomastown they are a white silvery colour. On the sample board, they are more of a beige/cream/parchment colour. I was told that the wall is the correct colour sample because they have changed quarries. Our bricks look like the board, not really a white silver colour at all. I know others have not been very impressed with Nougat once they arrived. (Hi G&A!!) so I will wait until they have been laid with the off white mortar and decide if I like them or not!

This is a brick sitting next to the fascia/gutter/downpipe colour. There was a smudge on the camera, which is why the colour is not clear.

We have received the frame invoice and we had our building inspector check this stage. He says "overall well constructed" and only found two minor issues, which we were really happy about. So, off this week to the bank to pay the frame invoice and do our bit to help the economy along.

The house on Monday, windows are in!

Wednesday, notice anything different? The portaloo was moved, they emptied the rubbish cage, "they?" swept out the frame, collected all the wood off cuts and rubbish from around the house, and used a bob cat to clear the footpath, graded the driveway and put down more gravel!

This is now the cleanest building site I have ever seen!

Friday, and we have scaffolding, roof tiles and bricks delivered.

And from the back

After they wrapped us up on Saturday. We extended the study by a metre so it sits out from bed 2..

The bit I was really hanging out to see, how big the entry was going to be. Because we extended the study, we were not sure if it was going to look a bit weird. We think it looks fine!

Have a great week everyone, stay safe!

Hi J,

The house looks great when it is wrapped and I don't see a problem at all with the entrance. I was also very impressed with the way the builders left our site - very neat!

I like the brick colour - it doesn't seem cream from the photo and I think it will be even lighter when the sun hits it. Are you going to have some rendering as well? I can't wait to see the finish product!

Yup, your brick looks exactly the same as ours. Although it's not what you expected, it's not going to look like an eyesore because the off-white mortar will blend in nicely. Really not happy with how misleading they are with the bricks...what's the point of having samples then?

Woo your house is going up FAST!

Great post J. Your guys are flying along down there (and I think T&L's guys did too). You must be "rapt' about being "wrapped" :-)

I love your entrance! I love long porches it was one thing I loved about the Monterey plan by H3nley (which was the other house competing with the Illoura for me). I think it will look lovely once complete.

Hope your bricks turn out okay. Seems to be an issue with most people with these bricks.

Is your study going to be used as a study or 5th bedroom? Look forward to seeing the roof up next.

Yes the CFA are doing a fantastic job. Steve and I sat down and watched nine this morning. Very sad with all the lives and homes lost yesterday.

CDB,
looking really good guys. You know our bricks looked rather boring sitting on the ground too but the off white mortar and of course the nice brick laying does set them off. One more thing we like, sorry all you dark coloured brick chosers, is that they are light and seem to make the house look much brighter. Great progress guys and agree thanks to the CFA.

Hi J
Its so good to see that your site is clean and you are happy with it. Seems like ur SS is serious about this stuff. Now are you able to estimate whther or not you are happy with the room sizes or not. Believe me or not, i am jealous of your bigger and extended Illoura. (Grrreeeen).lol

Thanks for the positive comments everyone :-)

Hey Mandy, we are not having render at all, my DH and I really don't like render. So it is all brick for us. Yes, I can't wait to see it finished either LOL.

Hi G&A, I hope the off white mortar does soften the look a bit. It certainly does seem fast, when they keep sending me bills!

Hi T, Really happy with how the entrance has turned out. We like it much better than the standard. It is going to be a study because I run a business from home so I needed the extra space to work in. Our thoughts and prayers are with those in the fires. Thank god, we have heard all our friends are ok. Where there is life, there is hope.

Hey R&C, I was just over at your blog looking at your stunning facade. Yes, lighter bricks for sure. There are 4 other houses going up in our court. All dark coloured bricks!

Hi WBH, yes our SS does seem very switched on and organised. The entire build is going like clockwork!
Two other houses started before us, one a month before and it does not even have the frame finished yet! The good thing is that the building inspector has only found two minor issues so even though it is fast, we know that it is right!
Looking at the rooms, now it is wrapped, it's gi-normous!

Have just heard that there are now 130 people dead. Our new home is less than 10k's from Yarra Glen. So looks like we will join the CFA when we move. Our prayers and thoughts are with the survivors and the fire crews. Hope they catch whoever set these fires and that they roast in hell.

Cheers
J

Hi J,

Wow cant believe it that couple weeks ago you jut had slab and now your house is wrapped!!!
Any idea when is the locked up stage?

Your long entrance looks good! Should be handy to have a bigger study room since you are working from home.

Hope your brick's colour turn out as what you want after they put them up with the rest. Can't wait for it! Really!

Hi BB, a huge thank-you to our CFA... they fight so hard with such bravery and determination.

Geez things are progressing quickly for you guys! Hopefully like most others, the bricks turn out to your liking. I'm sure it'll look fab once cleaned and offest by the mortar.
