Can you believe it?

From the back - left hand side of the block - 17m of retaining wall
From the back along the right hand side - 33m of retaining wall

Perfectly straight, hard to imagine after Christmas and New Year drinkies!

Can you believe that it is Saturday, 3rd of January 2009 and there were guys at our block this morning starting on putting up the retaining walls??????

Although our SS had said that the slab was due to be boxed on the 5th (Monday) and poured on the 7th (wednesday) I thought that nothing would happen until then. If, in fact, anything did happen then, given that it is Christmas/New Year's holidays etc. I expected most tradies to be off until the end of January Post Australia Day, anyway.

Can I believe it? No I can not!
I was already impressed to learn that you were expecting some action on Jan. 5th...but Jan. 3rd??? That is fantastic J! It must have been a pleasant surprise.
Massive retaining walls...and yet in your "block" photo your land looks reasonably flat.
Hope I can get some progress happening like you guys soon!

WHY DOES AN OLD MAN IN AMERICA WANT TO FOLLOW A BLOG ABOUT BUILDING A HOUSE IN AUSTRALIA?
I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT THIS BLOG WOULD ONLY BE OF INTEREST TO THE CHATEAU dE BELLEBEAU'S FAMILY,FRIENDS AND OTHERS NEARBY THAT ARE CURRENTLY BUILDING THEMSELVES!

Great stuff BB!! You must have been so pleased to see this. Looking forward to seeing the start of your home.

BTW, a tradie has been working on the PD house next door to us today. It's Sunday!

Happy New Illoura Year to you! It's great that you, K and WBH are travelling along your builds together. It's nice to compare notes :-)

0.o;;;; Retaining wall on the 3rd Jan? ENVYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!! LOL

I haven't gone to check our land for awhile now... hmm wonder we would have some action too...maybe not :(

Happy New Year to you too!!! Looks like it's a really good start of the year for you for having a retaining wall just 3 days after New Year :)

Wow BB, this is amazing, good to see some ation on your block and a big thanks for showing me how the retaining walls look like. We have a fair bit added to our site costs for retaining walls in Garage and at the back of property , however as you know we already have frame and roof but no sign of retaining walls. This calls for a well demanded credit from PD.
However happy to see that the tradies on your side of the world are serious about working.

Hey all, thanks for the positive comments!

Swaney3, anyone is welcome to read our blog.

Newbies, I hope it keeps up too! Ooops I just re-read that sentence it must be catching LOL. OMG, your wedding is only 6 weeks away. Hope everything is going smoothly.

Hi K, I can't believe it either. Yes, we thought we bought a "flat block". We can see where all the money for the retaining walls has gone. Three of those beauties have 1.2m in the ground as well.
I am soooo looking forward to your pics!!!

Great to hear from you T, sounds like the Cremorne is going along very nicely indeed. Hope that tradie did not wake you up too early. It is good that WBH, K and I are building together, it's much more interesting that way.

Hey Lex, I was stoked!! When my DH said "let's go check the block, they might have done something" I just went, "yeah right, as if". I think it's going to be hard to live that one down!!!

Hope you see some progress soon WBH, was it you asking about retaining walls and slabs on H1? I tried to find that post. One of our neighbours chatted to the guys doing it and it seems that it had to be done before the slab?? I know that they cost the equivalent of a third world budget, because they had to be engineered (over 1m)so I am glad to see them up.
Good luck on that credit!!

We can only hope that all the tradies are on their toes.

Yes BB, it was me on H1 asking about retaining walls.
I will be more than glad to take the credit, however i am more interested to know that, "if they were part of the plans, why did they miss it in first place."
I wonder if it will effect the integrity of the build or not.... We were explained during the tender appointment that these retaining walls are more than just important to avoid slab movements in future.
They owe me credit and an explanation for this, and i am sure that they will come up with an explanation that will make no sense to anybody but lets see what they have to say.
But i am glad that we can all learn from each other's build and are able to avoid as many hiccups as we can with this.
Cheers
